All Four Major Cell Phone Service Providers Sued for Selling Location Data

On May 2, 2019, two plaintiffs sued T-Mobile in federal court alleging that T-Mobile improperly sold plaintiffs’ location data to third parties in violation of federal law and T-Mobile’s own privacy policy. T-Mobile joins the other three major cell phone service providers, who have also been sued in cases alleging similar sales of location data. Verizon, Sprint and AT&T have now all been sued in class action lawsuits that allege the cellular service providers improperly sold subscribers’ location data to almost any third parties who were willing to pay for it. In some cases, plaintiffs allege that the cellular service provider improperly sold 911 location data.
